Here I am, back in my hometown, choking on this eulogy when my eyes land on her. The only one smiling, she’s impossible to miss. The beautiful stranger saves my speech before escaping on her skateboard, leaving me without so much as a name.

Since early retirement winds up being about as much fun as that time I broke my back, it’s a welcome relief to see the funeral crasher again months later, helping me through another low point.

Mysterious, wild, and elusive, Gia doesn’t do commitments, but I made the mistake of letting her skate away from me once. I won’t do it twice.

Little by little, we let each other in…until it comes time for me to return the favor by being her savior, then she tries dodging me all over again.

The rub though? On or off the mountain, boarding’s in my blood.
